Although March has started with a very cold wind and snow or hail showers, it usually warms up as the months progress. In the veg garden you can now plant out onion sets, these don’t mind frosty weather and will develop a strong root system to grow away strongly when the weather warms up.

You can also sow broad beans outdoors prepare early varieties of seed potato by chatting them, this means standing them in a seed trays or egg boxes in a light but frost free position such as a windowsill for a few weeks, you can then plant them outdoors in April when the soil warms up.

Mulch fruit trees and soft fruit bushes to conserve moisture later in spring and to reduce weed plants are planted before the end of March. If you let the old top growth on your Herbaceous Perennials in the autumn then now is the time to prune back to encourage new growth to emerge. If any gaps are apparent in the rock garden then fill these up now as flowering will soon be underway.

In the greenhouse open the vents on a warm sunny day, now is the time to sow peppers. Tomatoes and Aubergines. If you have any patio pots which were not planted by the autumn with bulbs and spring bedding then this can still be done.
